Whats New at California SIPS:
Curved SIPs eliminate most of the bending whether used as shown, where the skins are mostly all in compression, or upside down where the skins would be mostly in tension. >More

Frequently Asked Questions: SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel)
Q) What does SIP stand for?
A) STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANEL – an engineered, factory-produced, load bearing component that consists of foam bonded to OSB panels with structural adhesives similar to those used for other engineered wood products.
Q) What are SIPs used for?
A) SIPs are used as a framing system for custom homes, multi family applications (up to 4 stories tall) and light commercial applications. Restaurants, churches, office buildings, and schools have been framed out of SIPs.
Q) How thick are the panels?
A) SIPs are designed with foam cores that vary from 3 ½ to 11 ¼ inches dependent on structural application and climate of construction. The thicker the panel, the greater its thermal resistance and ability to span longer distances between load transfer points.
Q) What are some of the benefits in using the panels for the roof as well as the walls?
A) Great thermal insulation, long spans with no need for trusses, and endless cathedral ceiling possibilities are a few of the benefits.
Q) How are windows and doors installed into the panels?
A) We precisely cut openings and install boundary framing in the panels at our shop per plan.
Q) How is electrical wiring installed in the panels?
A) Horizontal and vertical chases are built into the foam core of the panel making electrical installation simple. Wiring is pushed through the chases during construction. Electrical boxes are cut into the interior panels.
Q) What about plumbing?
A) Most plumbing is installed in the interior walls. If necessary, panels can be cut per design to accommodate exterior wall plumbing.
Q) What exterior or interior finish can be used on the panels?
A) All types of sidings, claddings, and roofing materials can be applied to the exterior of SIPS. The interior is usually ½ inch gypsum board. The continuous wood facing of the interior panel provides an excellent nailing base and eliminates the search for studs.
Q) How have SIPs buildings performed in earthquakes?
A) Structural testing and real world earthquakes have shown that SIPs have outperformed conventional stick frame methods.
Q) How have SIPs buildings performed in fires?
A) Building codes have evaluated our panels and the panels have been found to meet or exceed their criteria. Other products such as NoBurn applied as a paint coating to the panels can help to make a SIPs home even more fire resistant.
Q) Where is California SIPS Located?
